Wike calls Atiku, Amaechi and Obi “political gamblers”, and they hit back

At a Rainbow Coalition town hall in Rivers, FCT minister Nyesom Wike told voters not to trust their destiny to “kalokalo” people. Atiku's ADC says he has “no moral authority”; Obi's NDC says Wike is the real gambler.

What Wike said: at a Rainbow Coalition town hall in Ayama, Abua/Odual LGA, Rivers, on Friday 16 October: “Don't trust your destiny to political gamblers. Don't trust your destiny to ‘kalokalo’ people.” Kalokalo is Pidgin for games of chance.

His case: the trio run for president every four years to recover what they lost. He said Atiku runs “purely out of political habit and desire to recoup his investments”, challenged Amaechi to show what he did for Abua/Odual, and urged voters to back Tinubu: “Give a destiny to somebody who we know, who has tried all this, and he has done it.”

Atiku's ADC: campaign spokesman Phrank Shaibu said “Wike has no moral authority to lecture anyone about political consistency”, calling his stance “a breathtaking act of political convenience.”

Obi's NDC: spokesman Osa Director said “Wike, and not Obi, is the political gambler”, adding: “At the NDC, we don't take people like Wike seriously.”

Context: Wike serves as Tinubu's FCT minister but remains a PDP member, backing APC candidates in Rivers through his Rainbow Coalition. He lost the 2022 PDP presidential primary to Atiku. Amaechi is now Atiku's ADC running mate; Obi is the NDC candidate.
