Tinubu's Kaduna flag-off: “They created the hunger”, and Atiku's reply

Tinubu opened his 2027 campaign at Kaduna Township Stadium, blaming his opponents for hunger and poverty. Atiku's campaign called it “delusion or political amnesia”. Here is what was said, what was claimed, and the other side.

The rally: supporters arrived from 5 a.m. and the president came in at about 3 p.m. with VP Shettima, Gov. Uba Sani, DG Abdulaziz Yari, APC governors and ministers. The Sun reports crowd surges and that some supporters left angry after hours of waiting.

Tinubu: “They created the hunger, they created the poverty. We are trying to eradicate it.” He also said “Fuel subsidy is behind us” and told voters: “Your fingerprints on the ballot will determine it.”

The campaign's case (unverified claims): Gov. Sani says 300+ schools and 150 health centres shut by insecurity have reopened and the Abuja–Kaduna–Kano road is about 95% done. Yari says reserves rose from $33.9bn to $54.7bn.

Context: NBS inflation was 15.39% in August 2026, down from 23.14% a year earlier. Prices are still rising, just more slowly.

The other side: Atiku's ADC campaign called the hunger claim “either delusion or a staggering case of political amnesia”, noting the APC has governed for 11+ years, and cited the naira falling from ₦471 to ₦1,329 per dollar. Makinde's APM campaign called the rally “a total flop” but offered no evidence.

Next: the APC campaign has named Port Harcourt and Maiduguri among its next stops.
