INEC: “The election must hold as scheduled”, final register out 15 December

INEC Chairman Joash Amupitan has ruled out any postponement of the 16 January 2027 election, saying the commission's statutory timeline is fixed. The final voters' register will be released on 15 December.

No postponement: speaking to INEC staff from the six South-South states in Port Harcourt on Saturday, 31 October, Prof. Joash Amupitan said: “Our statutory timeline is fixed. We will not change anything. The election must hold as scheduled.” His comments followed claims by some political groups that INEC was considering a new date.

Rivers in focus: Rivers leads the South-South with 3,736,434 registered voters, ahead of Delta (3,525,988), Edo (2,865,263), Akwa Ibom (2,566,198), Cross River (1,928,978) and Bayelsa (1,200,691). That is 15,823,550 in the zone.

The register: the final voters' register will be released on 15 December. INEC says it received more than 5,000 claims for corrections and more than 600 objections. Amupitan said he dropped an early plan to revalidate the register because it would be too close to the election.

Not AI: “It is the people of Nigeria that will decide the outcome of the elections and not AI or any algorithms,” he said.

Safety: INEC says it is working with the police, the DSS and other agencies. “We will not tell them to take their PVCs and then will not guarantee their safety.”
