Could Ebola delay the 2027 election? What the NCDC chief actually said

NCDC Director-General Jide Idris says a postponement “might be considered” if Ebola spreads widely, but “as of now, there is no need for that.” WHO says Nigeria has no active confirmed case, and only INEC can move the 16 January vote.

What he said: on Channels TV's Politics Today, NCDC DG Dr Jide Idris said: “We hope the election will not be postponed, but if the thing gets wide enough, that might be considered.” He added: “As of now, there is no need for that.” He gave no threshold for when a delay would be recommended.

The outbreak now: WHO says Nigeria has no active confirmed case. The NCDC is monitoring 54 primary contacts for 21 days after their last exposure. The index patient, who has improved, was flown to Switzerland with her husband, Health Minister Muhammad Ali Pate confirmed.

The calendar: the presidential and National Assembly elections are fixed for 16 January 2027; governorship and State Assembly polls for 6 February 2027. Only INEC can change the dates, and it has said nothing about a postponement.

Campaigns: Pate says there is no immediate need to cancel campaigns or large gatherings. The APC's Bala Ibrahim urged calm and warned against politicising the outbreak. The ADC's Phrank Shaibu fears it could be a pretext to restrict the opposition, and wants a full account of the ₦10bn Ebola fund. The SDP and NDC oppose suspension but want safer campaigning.

Stay safe: wash your hands often; if you have a fever, weakness or unusual bleeding, stay home and seek care. NCDC toll-free line: 6232.
