Edo: Tinubu country? Okpebholo vows to deliver the state as Wike admits blocking Ighodalo and the ADC pushes back

Governor Monday Okpebholo says Edo is ready to deliver President Tinubu and every APC candidate in January, and the Edo APC has endorsed him for a second term. The opposition ADC says it will not be intimidated.

The promise (30 Oct): after touring the presidential campaign secretariat in Benin City, Okpebholo said Edo is ready to deliver President Tinubu and all APC candidates at the January 2027 general election, and that the President's reforms are yielding results.

Second term: the Edo APC has endorsed Okpebholo for a second term. Edo votes for governor off-cycle, so the next governorship election is due in 2028. January's vote is for the President and the National Assembly.

How 2024 ended: Okpebholo won with 291,667 votes to 247,274 for the PDP's Asue Ighodalo. The Supreme Court upheld the result; former governor Godwin Obaseki maintains the poll was manipulated.

Wike's admission (13 Oct): at a Rainbow Coalition meeting in Abuja, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike said he opposed his own party's candidate, Ighodalo, to stop Obaseki from installing a successor, even though he called Ighodalo a good candidate. Ighodalo, Obaseki and the PDP had not responded.

The opposition: after the Edo APC chairman compared the push for Tinubu's votes to an “AK-47” burst, the ADC said it would not give in to “threats, intimidation and political blackmail” and is mobilising to vote the APC out. INEC's final voters' register is due on 15 December.
