Court sacks Governor Uzodimma as APC Imo West Senate candidate, says Okorocha won the primary

A Federal High Court in Abuja has held that Imo Governor Hope Uzodimma did not validly win the APC's Imo West senatorial primary, ordering the party to forward Rochas Okorocha's name to INEC. Uzodimma's camp is heading to the Court of Appeal.

The judgment: Justice Obiora Egwuatu held that Uzodimma did not emerge as the valid winner of the APC senatorial primary held on 18 May 2026, and that the evidence showed Okorocha won the majority of votes cast.

The orders: the court ordered Uzodimma to stop presenting himself as the APC candidate for the 16 January 2027 election, and directed the party to forward Okorocha's name to INEC.

The grounds: the judge held that the nomination breached Sections 29 and 32 of the Electoral Act and the APC's primary guidelines, and gave no weight to most of the governor's supporting documents because they contradicted each other.

Reactions: Okorocha hailed the ruling as a “victory for democracy”. The Imo APC rejected the judgment and said it still backs the governor, whose camp called it a “travesty of justice” and said it will appeal.

What next: the case now goes to the Court of Appeal, so the final name on the Imo West ballot is not yet settled.
